【語法】［toと(( towardの相違((］ (1) He ran to ［toward， for］ the door. 彼はドアの所へ走って行った《◆ to は方向の意に加えてドアに到達したことを暗示する. toward は方向「ドアに向かって」， for は目的「ドアを目がけて」》. (2) We walked toward each other. 我々は互いに歩み寄った(^×We walked to each other.)《◆ to は到着点を含意するので， 互いに歩み寄る意は表せない》.

【前】…に向かって∥ dash for ［to］ the door ドアへ突進する《◆ for は方向， to は到着点を表す》 / They left London for New York. 彼らはロンドンを発ってニューヨークへ向かった / a plane bound for Paris パリへ向かう飛行機《◆ from と相関的に用いる場合は to ： a plane bound from Paris to London パリ発でロンドンへ向かう飛行機》.

【前】…の中へ， …の方角へ∥ jump in the river 川へ飛び込む / put one's hand in one's pocket ポケットへ手を入れる / She went in the house. 彼女は家の中へ入って行った / in ［^×to］ that direction そちらの方向へ. ━【副】中へ∥ Come (on) in. 中へ入りなさい / They went in to see him. 彼らは彼に会うために中へ入って行った.

【語法】 ［inと(( into］ in は「中に［で］」という位置を表し， 通例運動の方向を示さないが， それ自身が運動・動作を表す dive， fall， jump， put， throw， thrust；break， cut， divide， fold などの動詞と共に用いると into の代りに in が用いられることがある. この場合， 動作よりも結果としての状態に重点がある. たとえば jump in the river では jump (into the river and be) in the river の圧縮表現と考えられる.

**into

【前】…の中へ∥ go into the house 家の中へ入る《◆目的語が文脈上明らかで省略されるときは in となる： go in 中へ入る》.
